چکیده

The sensitive state of conservation several endemic fish species such as Iberian toothcarp (Aphanius iberus) and Valencia (Valencia hispanica) has led governments to consider the implementation measures preserve their populations. However, limited knowledge about reproductive biology these makes it necessary investigate different aspects cycle. In this sense, main objectives work were i) advance breeding both species, ii) develop protocols for gametes future management conservation. During spring 2019 a temporal series samplings carried out in places Comunitat Valenciana. Sperm samples collected sperm motion parameters assessed first time species. Kinetic patterns similar showing high motility velocity values during 30 s, rapid decrease from that point. At same time, an in-depth morphometric analysis was using computer-assisted software. Spermatozoa A. iberus V. hispanica showed sizes shapes other external fertilizers belonging Cyprinodontiformes, with small spherical heads, uniflagellated without acrosomes. addition, new cryopreservation protocol designed cryobanking threatened Cryopreserved lower than fresh but reaching acceptable percentages motile cells after thawing around 20 25% (A. hispanica, respectively). This study is its kind successfully achieve gamete two endangered Peninsula, providing useful tools complement programs are being developed

Isolation and characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus causing infection in Iberian toothcarp Aphanius iberus.

High mortality among laboratory cultured Iberian toothcarp Aphanius iberus occurred in February 1997 in Valencia (Spain). The main signs of the disease were external haemorrhage and tail rot. Bacteria isolated from internal organs of infected fish were biochemically homogeneous and identified as Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The bacteria were haemolytic against erythrocytes from eel Anguilla anguill...

Aphanius marassantensis, a new toothcarp from the Kızılırmak drainage in northern Anatolia (Cyprinodontiformes: Cyprinodontidae).

Aphanius marassantensis, new species, is described from the Kızılırmak River drainage in northern Anatolia based on colouration, meristic and morphometric characters, and the mtDNA COI barcode region. It is distinguished from other Anatolian Aphanius by one or several of the following characters: a stout body shape (BD/SL 28.2-39.6%), complete scale cover, and 25-28 scales along the lateral lin...

Effects of enhanced hydrological connectivity on Mediterranean salt marsh fish assemblages with emphasis on the endangered Spanish toothcarp (Aphanius iberus)

The hydrological connectivity between the salt marsh and the sea was partially restored in a Mediterranean wetland containing isolated ponds resulting from former salt extraction and aquaculture activities. A preliminary assessment provided evidence that ponds farther from the sea hosted very large numbers of the endangered Spanish toothcarp, Aphanius iberus, suggesting that individuals had bee...

Temperature-Specific Competition between Invasive Mosquitofish and an Endangered Cyprinodontid Fish

Condition-specific competition is widespread in nature. Species inhabiting heterogeneous environments tend to differ in competitive abilities depending on environmental stressors. Interactions between these factors can allow coexistence of competing species, which may be particularly important between invasive and native species. Here, we examine the effects of temperature on competitive intera...
